ADI Part 3 Training and Examination |
||||
Part 3 Exam:The third examination is the Test of Instructional Ability. This exam takes the form of role-play where the Supervising Examiner (SE) will take on the role of the pupil. You will be required to teach the ‘pupil’ and improve their driving ability. The test is divided into two parts each lasting about half an hour. In the first part the SE will adopt the role of a beginner or partly trained driver. You will introduce subjects and cover both theory and practice. In the second part of the exam, the SE will assume the role of a pupil who is nearing test standard, or of a qualified driver undertaking driver development training, and you will be looking to improve and correct the ‘pupil’s’ driving. You will be marked on:
To pass you must achieve a minimum grade 4 in each part of the exam. You may only attempt this examination 3 times.

Part 3 Training:Training for Part 3 consists of one-to-one in-car practical tuition. During this time you will be taught the instructional techniques required to become an Approved Driving Instructor. This will include undertaking role-play techniques, where your trainer will take on the role of a pupil and you will learn how to instruct this ‘pupil’ in driving. Your trainer will take on different roles presenting pupils at various stages of driving competency, from a complete beginner, to a qualified driver. In this way, you will learn the relevant instructional techniques that will enable you to give instruction to the variety of pupils you will meet as a qualified Driving Instructor. You will be provided with a training workbook for Part 3 which is used alongside the training sessions and provides you with ideas to work on in your own time, and to act as a memory jogger for the subjects that have been covered during the training sessions. At the end of this training you should be ready to take your Part 3 test. You cannot apply to take this test until you have passed Parts 1 and 2. After qualifying as an ADI:During your period of registration, and when required to do so by the Registrar, you must undertake a test of ‘continued fitness to give instruction’, usually referred to as the ‘check-test’. You will be graded on: method, clarity, adequacy and correctness of instruction; the observation and proper correction of the pupil’s errors; manner, patience, tact and ability to inspire confidence. It is important to keep up to date in order to retain your grading. A sub-standard grade can result in you being removed from the Register. Refresher training prior to attending a check-test can be beneficial.
